Area: 2300 hectares
Climate: Mild, long winter, extreme, but dry summer, a lot of sunshine
Soil: Thick wind-blown loess with a thickness up to 30 metres
Grape varieties, wines:
- Kadarka – old, famous variety
- Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch)
- Szekszárdi Bikavér (Bull’s Blood of Szekszárd)
- Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc
- Chardonnay and Olaszrizling (Italian Riesling)
The slopes of Szekszárd is dominant by red grapes. By today Kadarka has become a rarity but its resettlement has already started. Other popular grape variety is Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) which rich in fragrance, harmonious, full-bodied, with high tannin contents. In general red wines from Szekszárd region are fiery, velvety with fine characteristic fragrance and bouquet. The Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) of Szekszárd is of ancient origin, it is made of 4 – 5 red grape varieties. Alongside Eger only Szekszárd is entitled to use the name Bull’s Blood. White wines are full and rich in aroma.
